Throwing Rice at Weddings

The tradition of throwing rice at weddings is rumored to have its roots in pagan customs. Rice, as a grain, represents fertility, and the tossing of it at the newly-wed bride and groom traditionally means blessings of good luck, prosperity, and lots of children to help tend the land.

At some point word got around that grains of rice left behind would pose a health risk for birds who might eat it, so wedding well-wishers switched over to throwing bird seeds as a benevolent gesture toward our feathered friends. However, this theory has been disproved, as birds can consume either rice (grain) or bird seed, with no harm done. Still, for various other reasons, people continue to seek other options to the traditional rice-throwing. Rice scattered about on the sidewalk and pavement can pose a risk to wedding guests and other church goers who may slip and fall on it. Additionally, it is messy and annoying to clean up.

Thus, for many years brides and grooms have sought other, fun items to have guests rain upon them on their wedding day. Bubbles have been popular for a long time. Some throw confetti, rose or other flower petals; and, more recently for night weddings, people have started a custom of setting off sparklers to light the way for the newly married couple.

So, which will you choose: the traditional rice? The animal-friendly bird seed? Bubbles? Nuts, fruits and raisins aka trail mix? Flower petals? Confetti? Or perhaps something unique that symbolizes something special between the two of you.

Whatever you decide, be sure to ask the permission of the wedding venue or church where you intend to be married. And in keeping with the frugal theme of this blog, always look for a great deal on your bulk purchase!
