How to Have a Rockin' Wedding and Still Save Mega Bucks

The secret to throwing a stand-out wedding without going broke in the process is this: find your non-negotiable wedding detail. Play that up as big as you want... then cut corners on the rest.

Easy. Painless. And makes a whole lot of (dollars and) sense!

Thus, it pays to consider what types of people you are before you wedding-plan. What are you into? What will the theme, or flavor of your wedding be?

My husband plays music. He's been in bands before. I, too, have musical inclinations, Singing songs, going to live shows, jamming with friends.... music has always been a thing for us. So when it was time to select an element to make our wedding uniquely us, the band was a no-brainer.

What made it even more special was that my husband knew some of the band members personally – they're friends of his family. They had history from way back, and I became part of that history! Great stuff, indeed.

In addition to our wedding band, we also had friends of ours play music for the ceremony. These were people my husband had been in his own band with at one time! What a great honor, to be serenaded into our own marriage ceremony by people we knew and had fond memories of.

Now, in all honesty – we spent a little money on the music for our wedding reception. That was our big investment, and we cut corners on everything else - and I mean EVERYTHING, in order to afford the band. You may not have that much cash to shell out. But just because you're being super frugal doesn't mean you can't find a way to play up a certain detail in a big way that makes it meaningful.

Keeping music as the example here... this is a low-budget version of how to emphasize music at your wedding. Hire a friend or family member to play DJ for the night. Set up the speakers etc. (he or she should know a thing or two about stereo systems). Take some time to make up a list of all the songs you'd love to hear on your wedding day. Include a few special memories – "This was my parents' wedding song..." "This was the song we first danced to." Give the list to your "DJ" and hopefully he'll be able to find and play a good amount of them!

So, what will you play up on the day of your nuptials? Below, some ideas:

For the Earthy types: A beautiful, botanical setting at a nearby park. A trek to a gorgeous, mountain setting. A camping weekend!

For the Jersey Shore peeps: (what else?) Beach wedding! Can you make that low budget? Would love to hear from my Jersey Shore sistahs with some frugal solutions for having a superb wedding-by-the-sea!

For the Foodies: A farmhouse dinner. A humble, firehouse potluck with guest contributions. An ethnic theme – Greek, Italian, Japanese, whatever your pleasure! An "around the world" dessert table!

For Theatrical Types: A masquerade party. A "period" wedding – Roaring '20s with vodka gimlets, antique accents and flapper attire. Fun '50s (think crinoline skirts and jitterbug). Head straight to Etsy.com to peruse their vintage offerings!

Or, maybe you don't want to get too crazy but you know there's a certain part of the wedding that will be special and personal for you. If you're marrying a chef, then put a lot of attention into making sure the food is outstanding. If you come from a family of big drinkers, then put your money on open bar (yes I really said that! People drink at weddings!)

My point is that if you keep most of the wedding details simple (or omit them entirely), you'll find that you actually do have a little bit of money (or time, in lieu of money) to research, plan, and execute ONE aspect of an incredible wedding day that will be fondly remembered for years to come.

Top Ways to Majorly Cut Wedding Day Expenses

I've had my NJ wedding blog for a while now. Those who read the About page will recognize that this is frugal wedding inspiration from a truly frugal bride.

Now, I can't speak for other brides on what's worth spending money on for your once-in-a-lifetime wedding day. But I can continue to share with you ideas for eliminating those typical bride things that add up to expensive and even extravagant!

Below, The NJ Wedding on a Budget Blog in Review:

Top Ways to Cut Corners and Still Have an Amazing Wedding Day!

Humble but tasteful wedding venue. Saving bank on the wedding hall doesn't mean you have to pick a dive in the sketchy part of town. As I mention all over this blog, we chose an all-inclusive, day wedding package at the Somerville Elks Club. The place looked great, we brought in a band (our big splurge), food was wonderful, everyone had a fine time.

Upcycle a family ring. Grandma's engagement ring is sitting in the safe deposit box. Aunt Edna passed down some diamonds. Your groom does NOT have to blow his life savings on your engagement and wedding rings. If relatives left some jewels behind, look into having them refashioned and refitted. Or just wear Nana's ring with pride!

Small bridal party. This works especially well if you have lots of friends and family and don't want to pick favorites. Limit it to Maid of Honor and Best Man. You'll save money on the rehearsal dinner, because you won't need one. You won't have to buy wedding-day thank-you gifts/jewelry for a crowd of people. You won't be tempted to spend extra on the wedding party table that doesn't exist. And you'll also be saving a bunch of other people a ton of money on wedding attire, gifts, limo ride, and a wedding shower.

Nix the engagement party. I think parents typically initiate the engagement party. A bash like this can be pretty pricey, so you and your hubby-to-be might be tempted to kick in some fundage to help foot the bill. I say, keep it simple for everyone. No extra event to add to guests' already brimming social calendar. No stress over booking, dressing, RSVPs and party prep. Let Mom and Dad squared keep their money in their own pockets for this. They might be grateful!

DIY deco. Makes things more complicated, but only if you go overboard with the details. The main wedding-day decorations that you'll probably want: a Sweetheart table (can be as simple as a white tablecloth and some white twinkling lights). A wedding arch (check Pinterest for creative ideas on the cheap). Maybe some simple but elegant table centerpieces that you can outsource to a crafty friend in lieu of a gift.

Secondhand wedding dress. Let's face it: you're going to don this getup once, and then hang it in the attic where it will remain for the rest of your life. Why not move with the times, and go on the hunt for a used bridal gown? There are plenty of excellent choices to be found on Ebay, Craigslist, and the other used wedding gown sites I've listed. Don't forget thrift shops and vintage boutiques.

Forgo the flowers. The cost of fresh foliage really adds up fast! Forget the florist. If you're a crafty bride with time to spare (lucky you!), you could hit Michael's and pick up some silk flowers to fashion some kind of centerpiece, wall decor, or sweetheart table adornment. Candle centerpieces make a nice alternative for those who don't want to splurge on sprays and sprigs.

Bum a ride. Wedding-day limo is just another expense you don't really need on your special day. Surely there's a guest on the list who's got some cool wheels and is willing to play chauffer for an hour. Think antique car, or even just streaming some cans from the back bumper of Dad's Oldsmobile!

Find your focus. Of course you want to make it special and memorable. You can do this by attending to ONE significant detail that everyone will remember. Ours was the Irish band – we put our money on music to make the day great. Maybe yours is a photo booth, a wedding weekend getaway, lavish desserts, or a great DJ and videographer.

Solicit the help of guests. You may have some creative friends and family members in the mix. Can you solicit their services in lieu of a gift envelope? Hire your rock star friend to play chamber music. Ask a painter pal to make up some centerpieces.

Serve up some sentimentality! A guest book for people to leave their well wishes. A book of handwritten Letters to the Bride. A Tastebook recipe collection if you're a couple of foodies.

Other ideas: Hire an amateur photographer found on Craigslist. Tell him or her that you're on a budget, and have them trim down the wedding-day package accordingly. Procure your wedding-day bling such as shoes, veil, purse, cufflinks – on Etsy.com. Find your wedding invitation package, table cards and thank-you notes at Staples! (They don't have to match.) Package and mail them yourself. Get your hair and makeup done by a friend who's fancy.

Something borrowed. You can always "rent" your wedding-day frou-frou from a friend! Shoes, veil, jewelry, tux or suit, child's suit and shoes. People often have these items taking up space in their homes. Put the word out about your nuptial necessities!

There are so many more ways to throw your dream-wedding and not letting your bank accounts take the hit. Keep following my NJ wedding blog for ideas!

Should You Plan Your Wedding Around a Holiday Weekend?

This is my personal opinion, so take it for what it is. I am all for frugal, and maybe some wedding vendors are offering discounts for booking on a holiday. That can definitely be an advantage.

I do not mean to offend anyone whose wedding anniversary falls on a holiday (do people actually get married on Christmas Day?). And it's not the end of the world if people have to postpone their beach weekend at the Jersey Shore, not throw that Memorial Day BBQ, or forgo their cozy V-day dinner date for one season out of their lifetime, because you're getting married.

But still. Here are some reasons it's better to NOT get married on a holiday or holiday weekend.

It puts pressure on others. Maybe New Year's typically involves heading into NYC, or Thanksgiving is celebrated with family out of state. Millions of people slog away at their jobs all year long, awaiting those anticipated breaks where they can catch some rest, spend time with loved ones, maybe change scenery and just enjoy a little freedom from the grind. "Drop everything and watch us get married," is what a holiday wedding says to me.

Holidays bring TRAFFIC – especially if you live in NJ! Congestion on the roads is a major source of stress on your wedding day. The last thing you want to do is arrive late, get there on-time but frazzled, or God forbid find yourself in a car accident en route to getting hitched! Guests will be traveling from long distances away in many cases, and do not want to arrive late to your nuptials, either.

Holidays bring a frenzy of activity, planning and prepwork – and with that, stress. And weddings, depending of course on how much detail you put into yours, require a great amount of even more of the same. Do you want your wedding day to be "just one more thing on the to-do list" during an already bustling holiday time? Or, wouldn't it be better to hold your special day at a time when people have a little give in their schedule?

Finally – you might get a little static from the people who will be working to serve you on your special day. Yes, it's their choice to work on a holiday. But many people in the customer service industry harbor resentment when they must perform their jobs on what are traditionally known "days off." Hopefully that won't happen, but my guess is that employee morale is at an all-time low on these days.

But what if you really want your wedding to be centered around a holiday theme? Say you're crazy about Halloween and all the costumes and goth decor? Or what if a snowy, Christmas-themed wedding is the be-all, end-all to you? I say go for it! But DO plan your wedding during the SEASON of your chosen holiday, not on the exact day when the holiday occurs.

You may have your own reasons for choosing a holiday wedding day, and that's okay. But if you're on the fence and have yet to make your decision, consider these points before moving forward with your plans!

Managing Your Wedding Guest RSVPs on Facebook

My husband and I got married on the coattails of Hurricane Sandy. If you ever could imagine a wedding of uncertainty, this was it.

Of course, our concern was with all of the friends and relatives in the tri-state area who had been impacted by the storm. Some of them were without power for the full week leading up to our wedding date. Some were older, frail, and ailing – not fit for the added stress and the long drive to NJ.

Thus, a lot of our wedding guest RSVPs were in flux – changing from Yes to No and back again.

By some miracle, we did have internet even with all the power outages in our area. So, to make things easier on everyone, I made our wedding day into a Facebook RSVP event and put all the invited guests who were also my FB friends in there.

It really took the stress off to be able to get those instant replies and not deal with lost mail or misplaced piles of invites or whatever monkey wrench may have been tossed in.

So, with any luck you won't be getting married during a headline- and history-making hurricane. But even if you do find that your RSVP list is getting hairy, my advice is to just take it to Facebook! It didn't take me long at all to put the page up, and was so much easier to manage in the end.

Happy wedding day to you, NJ bride!

Wedding Flower Alternatives to Fit Your Budget

As I mentioned elsewhere in this blog, we didn't have flowers at our wedding. My son was two at the time. As any mom of a tot will tell you, that doesn't leave time to plan anything, much less shop for the perfect, pocketbook-friendly flower arrangements.

Plus, wedding flower arrangements are hugely expensive! The costs averages $385 PER centerpiece, as per the Wedding Report.

So, we didn't have flowers. We had painted centerpieces created by my buddy, Laura of Laurasglassart.com.

However, if floral is your thang, then check these frugal flower alternatives to keep costs down at your wedding.

One small vase of a few blooms on each table – for an earthy, classic kind of elegance.

Instead of centerpieces on every table - how about just one for the head table, or the sweetheart table if that's what you're planning to have?

A mason jar centerpiece with just a couple of in-season flowers (very vintage!)

Flowers in tin cans – homespun wedding cuteness

Instead of huge, elaborate centerpieces – how about a floral spray? (still too much, in my estimation – but that's me, you might think otherwise. Also, wth is a "spray?" I'm so NOT fancy. But anywho...)

A bowl of water with a few flower blossoms floating in it, as a centerpiece.

Candle centerpiece, with a few flower buds scattered around it

Sweet Deal on Wedding Photography, Videography and Limo Combined

Hey there, frugal NJ brides! I was just perusing the Celebrations Advertiser when I spotted a great deal on wedding videography, photography and limo services all bundled together into one package.

"Excellent Photo Video" lets you customize your wedding package online. The offer includes 4 hours of wedding photography, 4 hours of video footage, and 2 hours of limo service in a Rolls Royce.

I checked out the various photos on their site and they look like they're talented at what they do. For instance... check out this "cherry blossom love" photo to the right. Pretty gorgeous, no?

In addition to weddings, they also provide the above mentioned services for fashion, corporate and commercial events. They list "maternity" and "family as bullet points but I'm not sure what that means exactly. I guess you could throw a real humdinger of a baby shower and then ride off into the sunset in your white rolls royce... now that's some kinda baby carriage!

Also, I noticed quite a few typos on their site, leading me to believe that perhaps English is a second language. Not sure about that, but got a chuckle over this line:

"This is great for unforgetten moments."

Anyway, check them out at http://excellentphotovideo.com or call 973 837 0050 or 732 208 1176.

Tell them you saw them being talked about in the "NJ Wedding on a Budget" blog!

Ditching the Wedding Cake Entirely

Here's a liberating and economical twist on wedding-day dessert: NOT having a wedding cake at all. My friend who snagged her wedding cake for $13 wins the cheap wedding cake contest hands-down... but for those who won't come across this option, don't be afraid to Just Say No to wedding cake.

Why no cake? Maybe you don't even like cake! Some people don't. My husband and I could have easily passed on the wedding cake extravaganza... it didn't even occur to us not to. There are some exciting wedding-dessert alternatives that will let guests satisfy their sweet tooth without frosting.

Some wedding-cake alternatives to consider:

Cupcakes. You may be able to strike a deal with a local baker who doesn't even have to know they're for a wedding. (Pssst! When people hear it's for your nuptials, they're more likely to hike up the prices).

Other alternative: have a bunch of happy bakers who also happen to be invited to your wedding show up with a dozen cupcakes each in a designated flavor. One cupcake tree on each table, what could be more fun?

These cupcakes are clearly NOT in the frugal bride's price range. Pic courtesy of FlickRiver.com

Pic courtesy of APieceofCakeinChicago.com
Pastries. Talk to your wedding caterer, who may be able to pull some strings and get you pastries on the cheap that have been purchased by an outside vendor. This will then permit you to slice off the cake-cutting fee. Napoleons, cream puffs, eclairs... mmm, who doesn't love pastries?

Pic courtesy ChadsChocolateFountains.com
Chocolate fountain. I had posted the NJ chocolate fountain website on an earlier blog... if you're really into chocolate, this could be a bride and groom dessert dream come true! Serve with fruit and cookies for dipping.

Pic courtesy Yelp.com
Cheesecakes. Big fans of the New York cheesecake? Mmmm... how about a table of cheesecakes in a variety of flavors, from lemon to chocolate to blueberry?

What to Ask Your Wedding Caterer

What are your most popularly requested (and enjoyed) entrees and sides?

Asking this question will give you a good idea of what types of meals to include for your wedding dinner. Whether it's a sit-down meal with food selections available to each person, or a buffet where guests get to sample a few different entrees at once... you want to offer choices that will appeal to a variety of palates and preferences.

A good rule of thumb (which, if the caterer is a good one, will likely already have in place) is to provide options that include either fish, red meat, chicken or vegetarian meal/pasta.

What types of cuisine do you specialize in?

Many brides and grooms decide that they'd like the wedding-day menu to reflect their heritage. Do you both come from Greek families? Then you might search for a caterer who can create an authentic Greek wedding menu. Even if you are of mixed backgrounds, it still can be fun to offer cuisine from one specific corner of the world. Perhaps Spanish food, including favorites like tappas, chicken and seafood paella, and rodiccio are at the top of your list. Or maybe you'd like a menu with a fresh, Asian theme that includes sushi, spicy Thai, and other eastern elements. If you do go with an ethnic menu, just be sure that the caterer can also provide options for more simply prepared meals that can be enjoyed by picky eaters and people with special dietary needs.

This brings us to the next question: do you accommodate special dietary requests?

Don't forget that some of your guests may have allergies, food intolerances, and medical conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, which would limit options for what they can eat. A good wedding caterer will be able to take requests for these guests. Inquire as to whether the cost of specially prepared meals is included in the per-price plate, or if there is a fee for adding to their menu.

Do you offer wedding menu packages, and what is the cost of each?

Our wedding caterer provided a list of buffet choices that we were able to pick and choose for each category (red meat, fish, chicken, pasta). A buffet meal typically costs less than tableside service, because it requires fewer employees.

Is the food prepared in advance in your own kitchen, or do you require a kitchen on-premises?

This question is important for DIY weddings where the caterer comes in from the outside (as opposed to the type of wedding venue that includes on-site catering). Ask whether their staff will require access to a kitchen that includes ovens, food storage facilities, etc. and then communicate this to the wedding hall people so you can be sure all your bases will be covered on the big day.

Do you offer a kids' menu, and if so, can the children be served first?

Feeding the kids first is a win for everybody. You can't go wrong with a simple menu that includes kid favorites like chicken fingers, fries, and simply prepared pasta. Children get hungry quickly, and feeding them on time will certainly stave off potential meltdowns, which will be key during a formal occasion such as a wedding. Advance-serving kids' meals also allows all of the parents in attendance to oversee their children's dinner ahead of time. This way, by the time their own meal is served the responsibility is out of the way and the parents can enjoy their food without interruption.
